Screen Resolutions

Have you noticed on a few web sites a message stating
"Best viewed with ... resolution?"

The simplest way to describe resolution is the number of dots or pixels that make up your images on your monitor, the more the pixels, the sharper the picture.   The larger the screen resolution, the larger the area of view on your monitor.

When a webmaster designs a web page, he/she can design it in many different resolutions, or screen sizes. The most common is resolutions webmasters stick with are 640 x 480 or 800 x 600. Where a problem comes in, is the page(s) look different viewed in different resolutions and the webmaster has no way of knowing which resolution a viewer will have their system set on.  If I were to design a web page in 800 x 600 resolution, I would have more screen area to work with. If someone viewed my page in 640 x 480, the letters would wrap differently, and/or you would have to scroll to the right to view more of the image.

Here is how to change your screen resolution to match what is best with either design:

1) On an area of your Windows desktop (not over an icon) right click your mouse button

2) Choose "Properties" from the drop down menu

3) Press the "Settings" tab on top at the far right

4) On the Settings screen find the "Desktop Area" and slide the adjustment icon choose either 640 X 480 or 800 X 600 resolution.

5) Be sure you click "Apply" and then "OK" or the settings will not take effect.

Simply follow these steps to change it back if you do not like the setting.   I suggest you become familiar in changing this setting because it may help you in certain software applications.  You may want to experiment with with screen resolutions in your main software applications and see which works best for you.

A note about screen size -- if you move your desktop icons to the bottom while in 800 X 600 resolution, they may be hidden if you switch back to 640 X 480. To resolve this quirk, simply move all your icons to the top of the screen before you change back to 640 X 480.
