ABOUT THIS BENEFIT
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a seventeen year old senior in high school and not be allowed to drive, not attend your senior prom in order not to ruin the evening for your friends, not go out with friends, not able to participate in sporting events and now not able to attend school because you are homebound? Ask Dalton Bubela of the Moravia-St. John area. For approximately the past four years, Dalton has been suffering with epileptic seizures. The seizures started with Dalton having a fixed stare and not blinking. Neither waving your hand in front of his face nor calling his name would rouse him from this state. Within time, he would “snap out of it” and come around. As time has passed, his seizures have grown into full grand mal seizures and have intensified in length and occurrence. Seizures have become a normal event in his life.
Dalton has been transported via life flight three times and experienced too many hospital stays to count, from Lavaca Medical Center in Hallettsville, Columbus Community Hospital, Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin, and Texas Children’s Hospital and Methodist Hospital both located at the Medical Center in Houston. He has sustained unbelievable rounds of testing after testing to try and determine if something can be done to alleviate the seizures.
Dalton’s most recent seizure resulted in a change of hospital and doctor. While waiting for an MRI, Dalton began seizing. The seizure was so intense he was admitted to ICU in the Neurological Unit at Methodist Hospital, medically induced into a coma, placed on a ventilator, and had a central line inserted in his neck for two days. After moving out of ICU for a couple of days, he was placed on a new medication and then allowed to go home.
Dalton returned to Methodist Hospital the following week for testing. Hopefully the new medication will control the seizures; however, if not, he faces the possibility of brain surgery. Medical expenses due to the helicopter life flights, numerous tests and hospital stays have grown by leaps and bounds. Friends and family will be hosting a benefit on April 2nd at Praha Hall to assist in defraying these expenses. A BBQ pork steak and trimmings meal will be served from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, dine-in or to-go. There will also be a live auction starting at 7:00 pm, a mini raffle and 50/50 drawings, a silent auction will close at 9:00 pm and great live entertainment by The Incredible Music Makers from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Please come out and enjoy an evening of food and fun and know whatever you do will help this wonderful child.
